Vegan Gummy Worms

October 12, 2018 by Cara

What is Halloween without some creepy, crawly worms to freak out your family with? These vegan gummy worms however are nothing to shutter at. Made with fresh fruit, Juicy Juice 100% Juice, apple flavor and agar powder, these fruity snacks are all treats without any of the tricks. Just easy, no sugar added ingredients that you can feel good about feeding your family.

That’s right, no sugar has been added to sweeten up these vegan gummy worms because they are solely sweetened to perfection by the apple juice from Juicy Juice.  You don’t need to add anything else, which for the parent who is always trying to find ways to make sure the snacks they feed their kids isn’t too full of sugar, this is music to the ears. Just good old fashioned creepy but fun naturally sweetened wormy snacks.

Making these vegan gummy worms couldn’t be easier and all you need are a few essential ingredients:

  • Juicy Juice 100% Juice, apple flavor
  • fresh fruit
  • agar powder (you can buy on Amazon–please note that I used the powder not the flakes)

It’s optional but you can also add flavoring oils to give these worms their own fun flavors for each color. Get creative with whatever flavors you want to add too. It’s also up to you if you want to add all natural food coloring to give a little more vibrancy to each worm color. I’ll leave that up to you!

Throw these vegan gummy worms into a beverage for a creepy Halloween sip, onto of some frozen yogurt bark, into or just straight into your kids’ mouths! They are sure to give your family a spooky delight.

Ingredients

Scale

For purple:

  • 1/2 c. blueberries, fresh or frozen
  • 3/4 c. Juicy Juice 100% Juice, apple flavor
  • 1/2 tsp. blueberry flavoring oil (optional)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. agar powder

For orange:

  • 1 small orange, peeled
  • 3/4 c. Juicy Juice 100% Juice, Orange Tangerine flavor
  • 1/2 tsp. blood orange flavoring oil (optional)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. agar powder

For yellow:

  • 3/4 c. Juicy Juice 100% Juice, apple flavor
  • few drops all natural yellow coloring
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon flavoring oil (optional)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. agar powder

For green:

  • 1 c. spinach, fresh
  • 3/4 c. Juicy Juice 100% Juice, apple flavor
  • 1–2 Tbsp. maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp. apple flavoring oil (optional)
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. agar powder

Instructions

  1. For the purple and green colors, place the blueberries or spinach into a pan with the apple juice and bring to a simmer over medium heat for 5 minutes until the juice has turned either purple or green. Remove the fruit/spinach from the pan, making sure you keep the liquid in tact.
  2. If you are making the orange colored worms, blend together the peeled orange and the Tangerine Orange juice until smooth. Place into a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Do a quick taste test. If you want you can add 1-2 Tbsp. maple syrup depending on your tastebuds. Also stir in the flavoring oil..
  4. At this point for all colors, stir in the agar powder and reduce to a simmer for 2 minutes. The agar should be completely dissolved by now. Whisk constantly.
  5. Remove from heat our into desired molds with a syringe* (I found a gummy worm mold that came with the syringe on Amazon).
  6. Refrigerate until sets, approximately 10 minutes.
  7. Keep chilled in the fridge for up to 1 week in an airtight container.

Notes

*If you do not have any fun molds, fear not. Simply line an 8×8 pan with parchment paper and pour the mix into the pan. Allow to set, remove from the pan and slice into thin, worm-like shapes.
