Turkey Rice, Rice{cake} baby.

November 10, 2011 by Cara

Title to be sung to the tune of

Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby.”

Let’s get serious here for a moment friends, shall we?

I continually scratch my head

at the fact that this food item:

is actually considered a dieter’s food staple.

Of course I understand the concept fully as to why anyone struggling with their weight

would rely upon these cakes of rice to be sufficient snacks.

Only the concept however,

because once you bite into one of these things,

several things occur:

1.  I immediately understand what eating packaging popcorn tastes like without ever tasting it.

2. Once finished with said cake of rice, I feel as hungry as I did prior to eating it.

3. The fact that the word “cake” is in its name is something I fully object to because nowhere during the course of eating these do I ever feel like I am partaking in something cake-like!!

4.  I can now nod in agreement when someone describes the taste of air.

It tastes like these rice cakes.

It tastes like nothing.

I used to struggle with my weight.

I’ve been there.

I thought that in order to lose weight, one had to indulge on:

rice cakes,

carrot sticks,

salads,

and

Crystal Light.

No wonder I didn’t succeed at dieting because you cannot live off of these things and be happy.

Well, how in the world do I transition from here?

Now that I have just convinced you all of why you shouldn’t eat rice cakes,

let us turn our attention to today’s turkey made from:

RICE CAKES!

(((hoots and hollering)))

Hmmm, kinda worked against myself today, didn’t I?

Turning a rice cake into a turkey…

Now that is finding the silver lining!

Now that is food of sustenance!

(How did I do with reining you back in???)

Plus it makes this food piece much more interesting doesn’t it?

(Is it working yet?)

Shall I tap dance now?

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 rice cake
  • 1 Tb. nut butter
  • 1/2 banana
  • almond slices
  • 1 raisin, cut in 1/2
  • 2 cashew halves
  • 1 almond half

I can feel the pounds just shedding away…

*it’s probably from the insane chewing that is involved with these cakes*

Again, not a cake.

Enjoy!

So this is what you were doing today instead of working at the office!!

Yes father. You found me out. Actually, I make most of these foods in advance, thank you very much. It’s called efficiency. You might wanna look it up in the dictionary 🙂

They really do taste like what I would expect packing popcorn to taste like! LOL! I used to eat them and I would have to spread peanut butter and other toppings as they are hard to stomach plain. I think your rice, rice turkey looks delish and a great way to snack! So adorable!

Yeah, it’s just hard to smile through eating a plain one, isn’t it? ha

So cute. Rice cakes are a staple at my house. I like them with stuff on them or even sometimes as is. Yes, I know…you have lost all respect.

OH! And Vanilla Ice? Seriously, were we separated at birth?

      • Cara

        November 10, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Dawn, I am beginning to think we were! For it is a rare yet treasured bit of love to find 2 people with an adoration for Vanilla Ice *and* “Teen Witch” (the movie alone really is a rarity!) ha

Wasn’t your first confession to me about prunes, Dawn, or am I just making this up? And now rice cakes. All else about you will cancel these out 🙂

      • Dawn

        November 10, 2011 at 3:25 pm

Yes, I love the prunes. Good thing I have a few redeeming qualities.

Wow, that was a fast reply. It is as if you are lurking behind the corner. I love the speedy delivery! Hmpf, prunes and rice cakes–if this is the worst of you, I can easily look past it 🙂

Rice cakes. I used to eat those covered with cashew butter, drizzled with maple syrup and topped with sliced banana. They were the only GF thing I could find in the store a decade ago. The only drawback was that you had to eat rice packing peanuts to get to the good stuff. You made a turkey out of a turkey, way to go, I especially like its fangs, er legs.
I hereby challenge you to a dandies turkey. Unless you’ve used them all in your hot chocolate and smores already.

I’m waiting for the Dandies, Laurel. You better believe that a turkey creation will be made from them once they arrive!

I think I’ll have to borrow an idea or two to surprise my niece + nephew on Thanksgiving–so many sweet ideas! And not just for kids 😀

Every so often I crave rice cakes…and I eat half a package in one sitting…or, you know, maybe a whole package in one sitting.

I think I’m craving rice cakes now. Rawrrr!

    • Cara

      November 10, 2011 at 6:57 am

HA!! Why don’t I just ship my entire bag out to you? I’m not sure it will get a lot of use in the next week or day 🙂

Rice cakes really are a sort of non-food… I love the texture of them but they’re like eating crunchy nothing. But the Emperor LOVES them so we always have some around the house these days. The idea of peanut butter on a rice cake might just blow his mind.

    Anyway, another beautiful turkey!

Are you soliciting ideas for more? The NY Times is doing a series of gluten free stuffing recipes this week and I think there’s something sort of funny about the idea of a turkey made out of stuffing…

    • Cara

      November 10, 2011 at 6:45 am

I’m always welcoming ideas! A turkey stuffing, eh? This sounds like a challenge that I will gladly accept… Thanks for the help! 🙂
I figured the little ones enjoy rice cakes more than adults, although I will say now that I have an entire bag to eat through since I only used 1 for the photo shoot, they do provide a certain satisfaction for my mindless munching quota I need filled 🙂

Awwww… I love rice cakes! Though I will concede, though they do absolutely nothing to fill me up and taste nothing like cake. And my boys will be alllll over these! The next time I buy rice cakes, that is…

    • Cara

      November 10, 2011 at 6:46 am

Aaaahh, why must they call them cakes? They deceive me so! When you buy yourself a bag and make these, you know what I will be asking for…

        One Meeeeeellion Dollars?

Close. A picture. But now I want a picture of you with your pinky to your mouth, saying One Meeelllion Dollars too…

      November 10, 2011 at 6:25 am

ooooh, i think you just made rice cakes look as palatable as they will ever be. nut butter, fruit, and holiday cheer make everything taste better.

    • Cara

      November 10, 2011 at 6:25 am

I love how holiday cheer is on that list 🙂
