Fish Bowl Smoothies

February 7, 2018 by Cara

Finally February and love is in the air! Or rather, the water. These blueberry smoothie bowls are the perfect way to make eating breakfast fun and interactive in the morning. Throw a strawberry-melon fish on top and you’re in business for the cutest Fish Bowl Smoothies (no real fish were used to make these smoothie bowls).

Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day but it’s not always the most fun. By 7am, nobody has had enough coffee and certainly no one has been awake long enough to be in full conversation mode (at least at my house, can anyone relate?) I mean, smiling before 9am, I struggle. That’s why bringing a little life to breakfast just to get the  family to smile always feels worth it to me. These special Valentines Day (or any day) Fish Bowl Smoothies are worth the extra few minutes in the morning and will surely make your whole crew smile too.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Smoothie Bowl:

  • 1 banana, chopped in to 4 parts
  • 2 6 oz. cups of yogurt (I used Green Valley Organics lactose-free strawberry yogurt)
  • 3/4 c. natural, unsalted peanut butter
  • 1 c. blueberries
  • 1/2 c. cooked oats

For the fish:

  • 3 strawberries, stems cut off
  • 1 larger cantaloupe slice, for the fins, eyes, and heart bubbles
  • 1 Tbsp. cacao nibs, for sea floor

Instructions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender, and blend on high for one minute or until smoothie is thick and smooth.
  2. Pour into a bowl and place in freezer
  3. Cut 3 of strawberries from top to bottom into thin pieces for the “scales” and place on top of the smoothie bowl for the fish.
  4. Slice the last strawberry in half for the fish face and place on top of the smoothie bowl.
  5. Cut a cantaloupe slice in the shape of a wide “U” for the back fin and into two small triangles for the front side fins.
  6. Cut a small circle from the cantaloup for the eyeballs and carefully cut out three small hearts for the bubbles.
  7. Sprinkle cacao nibs for the sea floor.

I make smoothie bowls almost daily, rotating fruits and veggies often. However, this blueberry smoothie with lactose free strawberry yogurt is equal parts tart and creamy and always a crowd-pleaser. Try out this simple smoothie recipe and let us know what you think!

How long do you freeze the smoothie bowl before placing the fishie bits on top?

Freeze it for 10-15 minutes, just enough for it to hold up the fish (and not sink). Have fun!
