Vegan Fig Witches

October 26, 2011 by Cara

The Official Halloween Countdown says:

FIVE days left!

Which means we have 5 more days to crank out as many

Halloween:

ideas as possible.

Oh, the pressure!

So in order to ease our nerves (or mine, really),

feast your eyes on some edible witches  while I lighten up the mood with this

quiz to test your knowledge of movies about witches.

I will give you the quote and it will be your job

to tell me which movie it was in.

Are you ready for this?

(((First, check out the Fig Witches. They get sensitive when no one pays them any attention.)))

Vegan Fig Witches

Okay, now for the fun part:

(answer key is on the bottom of the post)

Remember: No cheating, you cheaters!!

1). “Begone, before someone drops a house on you!”

2). To be sung as a rap: “Top that, top that, I don’t really give a about trying to top that. I’m hot and you’re not. But if you wanna hang with me I’ll give it one shot. Top that!”

3). “You’re terrible!” “No I’m not, I’m fabulous!”

4). “She’s a witch! She turned me into a newt!”

5). “Go to hell!” “Oh, I’ve been there, thank you. I found it quite lovely.”

6). “OK, here’s your motivation. You’re lost, you’re angry in the woods, and no one is here to help you. There’s a witch and she keeps leaving *bleep* outside your door. There’s no one here to help you! She left little trinkets, you took one of them, she ran after us. There’s no one here to help you! We walked for 15 hours today, we ended up in the same place! There’s no one here to help you, THAT’S your motivation! THAT’S YOUR MOTIVATION!”

7). “Now repeat after me — without wands please — repeat after me, Riddikulus.”

8). (chanting) “Witch! Witch! You’re a bitch! Witch! Witch! You’re a witch!”  “You think after three hundred years they would come up with a better line.”

9). “Watch out for the weirdos, girls.”  “We are the weirdos, mister.”

10). “I’m not a witch; I’m your wife!”

Vegan Fig Witches

Well? How do you think you did?

While you still brew over some of those quotes,

here is the assembling instructions for the fig witches:

Fig Witches Recipe

Makes 6 witches

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 figs, cut in half
  • 6 GF/vegan rice crackers (I bought these)
  • 1/4 c. Daiya cheeze
  • 4 green olives, sliced
  • 1 tsp vegan cream cheese

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Drizzle Daiya on top of crackers, making sure it spills over on the sides. Place in toaster over and cook until melted and a bit crisp.
  2. Place the cracker, cheese side down onto the body of the fig. Place the top of the fig above it.
  3. Using just a dab of the cream cheese, lightly place it on to the green olive slices and stick them on the body for eyeballs.

And now I have a trivia question that you must answer for me: I must know what Ostara is!

LOL! I think I got most of them (but honestly, I had to pause to mentally do the voices for Monty Python and Princess Bride. “She turned me into a nyyeeewt!”) Very creative, those fig witches.

Hahaha! Oh I wish I would have been there in your brain to hear your impersonations! Why does it always sound better in my head than when it comes out of my mouth, you know? And you got *most* of them??? I think we have our grand prize winner here, folks!!!

Such an awesome idea Cara! I love your creativity with food, it’s honestly inspiring and fun.

I only got Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter and Hocus Pocus on the quiz. Bummer! Hocus Pocus is one of my favourite movies though so I got really excited when I saw that quote because I didn’t have to think too hard.

Oh and – I’m not doing anything special with those apples. I made applesauce and that’s about it. haha. I just don’t have anything interesting to post this week.

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 5:40 pm

You are just in luck! I am handing out A+’s all day long for anyone who got 1 or more answers correctly. YAY for you! Now your GPA won’t be ruined… Thank you for your sweet words, Isobelle. It means a lot to me, especially coming from one creative food girl like yourself. And you hush about nothing interesting to post–I wanna see that applesauce now, dammit! 🙂 <–sorry, sometimes I get angry… You are one of the few people that I could read their posts everyday. So get on that, will ya???

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Jessy, live no longer in shame! This is hands-down the best movie of the 80’s (((unofficially))). It’s what got me through junior high and high school. And man, did I want her hair badly! (I’m kinda embarrassed to admit that when I did go to the hair salon, I would ask for the “Louise hair side-wings”…you know what I’m talking about…post “I wanna be the most popular girl” song)…

    October 26, 2011 at 9:18 am

i think i only know two.
    6. blair witch project?
    9. the craft, of course, my fave movie ever 🙂

    cute fig witches 🙂

    • Cara

Well done with The Craft. I wasn’t sure if anyone really knew where that one was from. Bravo, Rachel!

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 9:13 am

I just had to look up what a Samhain was 🙂 Oh, how fun–you should totally make these. A perfect appetizer for such an event, Marjorie!

  11. Jan

    October 26, 2011 at 7:52 am

i appreciate how considerate you are of the witches feelings. what a good chef mother you are.

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 8:12 am

Well Jan, it’s my duty to do so. One must consider everyone’s feelings and incorporate them in as much as possible. It’s what every good “6” does! I would hate to be haunted by the thoughts of “Do the witches like me? Did I do enough for them? Are they mad at me? Should I talk to them to clear the air? What did that look just mean?” hahahahahaha

      • Jan

        October 29, 2011 at 9:45 am

at least in this case if they look at you the wrong way you can just devour them! and then say through your tears.. . .”i just wanted to help you. . i just wanted to be your friend. . .”

        • Cara

          October 29, 2011 at 11:42 am

BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh, that is the funniest thing I have ever heard. Well done, Jan. Well done. *tipping my hat off to your humor*

  12. GiGi

    October 26, 2011 at 7:44 am

Another brilliant Cara creation!!! I’m hyperventilating with the pop quiz though. I know Jack. Haha. That’s the only answer I knew 😉 The Witches Of Eastwick.

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 7:47 am

And one is all you need in order to pass, so you WIN! A+ Woo-hoooo!!! If only quizzes were this easy back in the day in school…

  13. Brooke

    October 26, 2011 at 7:24 am

These might be the cutest freakin’ witches of all time! Also, I am woefully under prepared apparently when it comes to movie witch trivia. I only knew 4 of them! I love Hocus Pocus! But my all time favorite witch movie is the 1986 version of “The Worst Witch.” Talk about strangely attractive. Hello, Tim Curry. It’s a horrible movie, really. But it wasn’t Halloween in elementary school without a visit from the VHS cart and “The Worst Witch.”

    • Brooke

      October 26, 2011 at 7:25 am

      PS, I think there’s a ghost in your cauldron… 😉

      • Cara

        October 26, 2011 at 7:39 am

        Smoking. Again.

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 7:39 am

The important question, Brooke, is did you get #2??? You were on my mind while I was creating this quiz and I kept thinking, If Brooke knows #2, well then, that just seals the deal (not that I really needed another reason…) And Tim Curry. Hello, Clue? LOVE. Never seen “The Worst Witch” though…

      • Brooke

        October 26, 2011 at 8:19 am

We’re 0 for 2 then, I’m afraid. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Teen Witch, though it looks like it’s up my alley. It’s got rapping AND witches for Pete’s sake! I wonder if I can get it from Netflix before Halloween…

        • Cara

          October 26, 2011 at 8:24 am

You are definitely in for the ride of your life! Hahaha. It’s so horrible, it’s fabulous–one of *those* movies. Tell me if you find it on Netflix and I will bring the popcorn and crash your Teen Witch party! Then we can rap all night long…

          • dawn

            October 26, 2011 at 11:35 am

You can’t get it streaming right now, but they do say they have the dvd if you’re on that plan. ABC Family usually shows it around Halloween.

          • dawn

            October 26, 2011 at 11:38 am

10am Sat Oct 29 ABC Family. Set your dvr 😀 I’m assuming that’s EST, but IMDB doesn’t say.

          • Cara

            October 26, 2011 at 6:07 pm

Whaaaaaaa??? Dawn, you are my little angel for saying this…

          • Dawn

            October 26, 2011 at 7:07 pm

<3 I'll send you an address for leftover candies 😉

          • Cara

            October 26, 2011 at 7:12 pm

I had a feeling that candy would be an expected exchange here… 🙂

        • The Sister

          October 28, 2011 at 8:53 pm

Oh man! Brooke has NEVER seen Teen Witch?!?! Too bad. Girl, you’re missing out!

          • Cara

            October 28, 2011 at 8:55 pm

Brooke IS missing out! (not the Brooke you know, Sher–but another very super duper cool Brooke!)

  14. Laurel

    October 26, 2011 at 7:20 am

I, too, flunked the quiz. I’ve seen 7 of those 10 movies and got about 5 right. Well, everyone hates an over-achiever anyway. Those witches are adorable. Now, if I could ONLY get my hands on some fresh figs (she’s been saying for several years now) and some soy free cream cheese…maybe some motivation… I think I’ll just call one of those white gloved servants over.

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 7:37 am

hahaha! “Everyone hates an over-achiever.” Hilarious!!! You are too funny. Do you have a Sprouts Laurel? I thought they just opened one relatively close by, no? That is where I bought the figs yesterday–not sure however if they will be in Dallas, though. Worth a shot! Or you could use pears… You’re screwed on the soy free cream cheese though… 🙂

      • dawn

        October 26, 2011 at 11:50 am

you could use some cashew goat cheese. it’s not quite the same as cream cheese, but it goes well with figs.

        • Cara

          October 26, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Brilliant!!! LOVE that suggestion–way to go, team! 🙂

      • Laurel

        October 26, 2011 at 2:58 pm

There is supposed to be a Sprouts around here somewhere but seriously as high as gas prices are I’m not driving an 1 1/2 each way for figgy witches. Now figgy pudding might be a different story. Never made that. Hmm…First I owe you an email but you have to email me first because I don’t have your email address because I didn’t see an email address on your about me page. Now I’m hyperventilating! Seriously, email me tomorrow. Please.

        • Cara

          October 26, 2011 at 5:43 pm

The Sprouts is like 20 minutes away from my sister who refuses to drive that far. I swear, you Texans. I shook my head at her with disgust. She is not the person I once knew. I mean, growing up in southern California, you expect to drive AT LEAST 45 minutes to go anywhere. At least. What has that state done to you people??? haha. Okay, okay, stop yelling at me Laurel, I’m emailing you right now… gesh! P.S. my address is on the bottom but I will still email you 🙂

  15. coldandsleepy

    October 26, 2011 at 5:59 am

Fig witches! These make me want to have a fancy Halloween party. (Figs are always fancy in my world.) The Daiya hair is way too cute.

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 6:33 am

Shall I bring the tea and croquet? (that is what people do at fancy parties, right? Eat figs, drink tea and play croquet in the backyard?)

      • Laurel

        October 26, 2011 at 7:16 am

        You forgot the badminton.

        • Cara

          October 26, 2011 at 7:35 am

Dangit! I knew I was forgetting something. Leave it to Laurel to remind me 🙂

  16. Amanda

    October 26, 2011 at 5:14 am

Those are the most tasty looking witches I’ve ever seen. Too cute! I failed at the quiz, I only got about two. Apparently, I need to watch more movies!

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 6:31 am

Don’t feel too bad Amanda, some of those were really hard! I would have done poorly (and this girl has seen A LOT of movies!)

  17. Jeni Treehugger

    October 26, 2011 at 4:14 am

I shall be cast from the coven…..

    • Cara

      October 26, 2011 at 6:20 am

I just talked to the witches, Jeni, and they said that surprisingly, they are a little more forgiving than one would think. You are off the hook for not getting the Harry Potter quote, but they said if you don’t bring their favorite dish at next month’s potluck, then you just might be cast out. There’s always a second chance, see?

  18. Jeni Treehugger

    October 26, 2011 at 3:55 am

Oh…..and now I feel worse for not getting Harry Potter – I knew I knew that quote but just couldn’t place it….

  19. Jeni Treehugger

    October 26, 2011 at 3:52 am

Oooh I love the little fig witches but I suck pants at your ghoulish little quiz.
    1. Wizard of Oz
    3. Witches of Eastwick
    4. Holy Grail
    8. Pratical Magic

    WHAAAAAAA!!!!
I feel shamed, witches around the world will snub me.
