Gluten free Vegan Oreos

January 11, 2012 by Cara

Friends, it’s time to get serious. We need to have “the” talk. No, not that  talk. The other talk. You know, the one where we sit down and discuss why on earth 2 chocolate cookies sandwiched between a thick cream tastes soooooo insanely good?

Just like you remembered, these gluten free vegan Oreos are made without the ingredients that will upset your little ones belly.

And why did it take me so long to recreate an exact version of those delightful cookies we call Oreos? This discussion, of course, must be made over an ice cold glass of rice milk and 2 Moreos cookies.  Maybe 3.

Just like you remembered, these gluten free vegan Oreos are made without the ingredients that will upset your little ones belly.

These are even kid-tested. A 5-year old and 12-year old were my guinea pigs and both of them said they *loved* these. The 12-year old even said that they were better than the store bought version. (I think she was blowing sunshine up my butt, however). What a terrible visual, by the way.  All I’m saying is, as I was uploading these photos, I had to run and get another one. The pictures were sparking up a lust in me. Drool did occur.

Utter perfection. And you just might faint once you see this picture:

Just like you remembered, these gluten free vegan Oreos are made without the ingredients that will upset your little ones belly.

Do you see what I see??? (No, I’m not talking about that insanely adorable dog in the background, or my model’s brightly colored fingers)… My fingers trembled the first time I twisted the cookies in order to see if they would smoothly separate the way real Oreos do, leaving the cream full intact. I screamed with excitement when they did!

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 c. Cara’s All-Purpose Flour Mix
  • ΒΌ c. cocoa powder
  • ΒΌ c. granulated sugar
  • ΒΌ tsp. salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 4 Tbsp. nondairy milk
  • 2 Tbsp. coconut oil, solid (or non-hydrogenated shortening)
  • 1 Tbsp. molasses

Cream Filling:

  • 7 Tbsp. non-hydrogenated shortening
  • 3 c. powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Using a fork, “cut” in the oil or shortening into the flour to create pea-sized bits. Add the remainder of the ingredients. Your dough should be smooth, add 1 Tablespoon nondairy milk if not until smooth.
  3. Roll half the dough between two pieces of parchment paper. Cut into 2″ circles. Repeat with the second half of the dough. Should make 24 circle cookies.
  4. Bake for 8 minutes. Cool on a wire rack–they will firm up the longer they sit.
  5. With an electric mixer on medium speed, whip up the Oreo filling ingredients until smooth. Pour into a plastic baggie and cut one corner out. Pipe the filling onto one cookie and then sandwich with another.
  6. In a shallow dish, combine the melted chocolate, mint, and shortening (or oil) until smooth. Dip each cookie into the melted mint chocolate. Allow to set on a piece of parchment paper until firm. You can either freeze or sit on the counter.

I’m trying to make this and was confused about the amount of flour. Is it 1 or 2 cups?

Just made these and they are great! A couple of things though that I am confused about – I see in the recipe 1 cup of flour – in the comments 2 cups are mentioned. I used 1 cup. Maybe you meant this recipe was to be doubled? Idk – too lazy to scroll allll the way up and re-read cuz I am on my phone. Perhaps I missed something. Also – you mention mint/chocolate on the last step of tbe recipe but don’t list the ingredients and by the pictures I don’t see any type of chocolate coating… Someone asked if they could sub a multi-purpose GF flour and you said you don’t bake with gluten so you arn’t sure – but she was asking about a GF flour. I am on my phone so maybe I just read it all wrong.

ANYWAY – I used Bob’s multi-purpose GF flour – worked fine. Yours might taste better I suppose – but I prefer to just use a GF multi-purpose flour since I don’t bake often. But in case anyone is wondering – it worked fine. I used 1 cup though as I do not see 2 cups in the recipe.

I also used unsweetened cocoa powder – the cookie isn’t sweet tasting but I like that with the sweet frosting

I used soy free earth balance for the cookies and the frosting.

The dough was perfect. Did not need to add any more milk.

I used cashew milk. What else – I added a bit of cashew milk and a little bit of vanilla to the frosting. I used about 6 tablespoons of earth balance. Frosting was awesome. Really really good and perfect consistency.

I was going to attempt to roll out dough but it was a bit sticky and I am lazy. I rolled them into small balls and squashed them with the bottom of a cup dipped in sugar. I rolled a couple of balls in sugar that seemed a bit stickier than others.

I spooned frosting onto cookie and sandwiched them that way.

Next time I will make smaller balls and flatten them slightly more.

8 minutes at 350 was perfect.

    Thanks for the recipe!!!

Hello Cara, Thank you so much for publishing your desserts cookbook! My son has EE and other food allergies which make baking difficult, but your cookbook is filled with great recipes for us to try.

For this recipe, should we use regular/sweetened cocoa powder? I tried with unsweetened dark cocoa powder (recommended elsewhere on your site for other recipes iirc), but the cookies came out somewhat bitter. They still tasted OK with the frosting, but I was wondering if sweetened/regular cocoa would make them all that much better.

    Thank you!

Instead of 3/4 c. brown rice flour, 3/4 c. sorghum flour, 1/4 c. potato starch, and 1/4 c. arrowroot powder, can I substitute that for 2 cups of multipurpose gluten free flour?

    • Cara

      September 30, 2014 at 9:11 am

You can always try that, yes! I don’t bake with gluten flours so I cannot guarantee it because usually gluten-free baking uses a little more liquid than normal. Try it out, maybe using 1/4 c. less and if you need it (the dough is too sticky) then add it in at the end πŸ™‚

I will be trying this recipe immediately! My daughter is autistic and on a GFDF diet but she can tell at a glance when we try to give her a ‘fake’ oreo. She checks the top for the letters. So we tried breaking them in half thus destroying the obvious evidence. Broken fake oreo goes in and immediately comes back out. Then she give you a look of utter loathing and wipes her tongue on her hand and her hand on her shirt as she marches away. She loves Oreos so I have been searching for something that will not upset her tummy. Thanks!!!

    Cara,
Can you substitute tapioca or potato starch for the arrowroot powder? This was one of those rare recipes where that is the only ingredient that I was lacking! I have been gluten free for about a year and a half now, and just went dairy-free this month due to allergies. These look so great! Thanks for sharing.

Now by fluffy snuggles are you referring to your dog or your husband? What? He could be a hairy guy that you refer to as fluffy πŸ™‚ hehe
I just made more Oreos, just so you know how GOOD these guys are! Make some NOW! <–demanding. I guess chocolate will do that to you…

haha.. i dont brush hubbs teeth! i made some pink sweet things yesterday.. so will have to finish those off first.. i did however make a tart and 2 flat bread buns. glutenfree! i baked the tart, and cooked the buns on a pan. the buns are softer! these individual buns are easier to keep moist and less crumbly than one big loaf!

        • Cara

          January 11, 2012 at 7:32 pm

What do you put on those buns? I was just thinking about making some for a chickpea burger recipe I just found. Would they work for that?

      • Jan

        January 11, 2012 at 11:36 am

two weeks? try 9 days beotch!! are you happy with our semi plans so far? not enough reinforcement yet and the 6 questions are beginning!! does she like this? is she happy? am i a good friend? is she going to tell me if you knew me you would never book us for an improv show? am i a SIX? :/

        • Cara

          January 11, 2012 at 11:41 am

Well, 1 week plus 2 days = 2 weeks in my mind πŸ™‚ Get off my back-uh! BAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh good grief, you better put those questions to rest, missy. We will have none of that. Improv show??? As long as we are not the comedians, I would LOVE that!!! Aside from that, we are going to eat Moreos all day long in bed, while playing Family Feud, also while Archer is on in the background.

          Yes, I am beginning to think my little 4 is a 6 now… πŸ™‚

          • Jan

            January 11, 2012 at 11:57 am

no we are not the comedians. . AND it is a contest where the improv-ers have to battle to the death til the end. sounds delicious to me and reminds me of the good ol’ days when Cara was a 7. heh πŸ™‚ i forgot about family feud, what is wrong with me!?! must bring laptop. . .
i think i am a 6 sometimes. from my massages lately it turns out i have all sorts of diaphragm issues which is a total 6 thing. you know, created by holding in your own voice literally and figuratively. are we really having this conversation on your blog thread? anyway. . . .i just want to be like you!

You’ll be totally disgusted to learn and will no longer be my friend, I know. I used to unscrew the Oreos and scrape out the filling, then eat the cookies with lots of milk! It was the only occasion on which I’d drink the stuff. Beautiful photos and models, now I want a bag or Moreos. P.S. That pup was just protesting the ‘Do not Feed the Dog with Chocolate’ rule. P.P.S. Are you adding this flour ratio to the Flour Mix page? Soft cookie dough, Firm cookie dough, Give it a rest already dough…

    • Cara

      January 11, 2012 at 8:24 am

ACTUALLY…I’m not disgusted at all, in fact, I like you even MORE because I would do the same thing!!! Same goes with cake. I only want the cake, not the icing. Yuck. And yes! This is my secret (though not so secret really) flour mix. I love it and have been using it in everything and am LOVING the results! xo

      • Laurel

        January 11, 2012 at 8:29 am

I was thinking the same thing about cake after I sent off my comments. Yuck. The stuff gave me the willies. I think it was made of industrial waste or something. The only frosting I could ever stand was on the Hostess SnoBalls and that was because it was marshmallows NOT frosting at all. See, great minds think alike! xo

        • Cara

          January 11, 2012 at 8:31 am

Not bad for a girl who just learned all of this 6 months, wouldn’t you say? hehe. Yeah, today I’m feeling like I pretty much rock. That is, until I make something tomorrow that is an epic fail. ha. But even then, I beginning to believe that baking is becoming my strength now. Thanks Nora!
