Grandma is sitting this one out on New Year’s…

December 28, 2011 by Cara

This is the funny thing about holidays

that require me to stay up into the wee hours of the night:

I usually don’t celebrate them.

(thankfully that only makes 1 holiday missed for the year)

You see friends, I am what you call a “grandma”–

no offense to the real grandmas out there.

It’s just that I am in my pj’s by 7pm and usually asleep by 10pm at the latest.

(((I also am an avid Wheel of Fortune watcher

and am thrilled by a good game of crossword puzzling))).

But in my defense I wake up at 5:30am almost every morning–

early mornings have become my “thing”

and there is no functioning at that time of day when you have

stayed up until midnight!

Eek, good grief, no.

So there will be no partying for this young whipper-snapper

come this New Year’s Eve.

Just the way I like it.

And while you are busting a move to Lady GaGa

(or whatever it is that you kids are listening to these days)

until the wee hours of the night,

I will be blowing on my edible party horn at 6pm,

hip-hip-hooraying my way into bed.

Wow, am I a ball of excitement or what??!

Who’s with me?

Edible Party Horn Blowers Recipe

Makes 1 party horn

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 gluten free ice cream cone
  • melted Enjoy Life non-dairy chocolate chips
  • 1/2 pretzel stick, dipped in melted non-dairy white chocolate, set
  • non-dairy icing, colored

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Cut ice cream cone 1/2 inch at the tip. Place white chocolate-covered pretzel stick inside until able to stay without holding. Lather cone with melted chocolate chips. Allow to set.
  2. Once set, decorate with non-dairy icing.
  3. Set on table for all your party guests to enjoy.

Make sure you have a cocktail or 2 for me

and do a couple more moves of the Running Man

in my honor.

That is, unless you are like me and are a party pooper…

Okay, it’s official you are my long lost twin sister separated at birth – I think I have managed to stay awake for “1” New Years Eve!
    In my Pj’s by 7pm – Check
Always up for a razzing game of Scrabble – ME!
Passed out on the Couch by 9:30pm- Check
Last time I went to a club and listened to Lady Gaga – couldn’t tell you

SCRABBLE!!! I forgot about my infinity towards Scrabble. Yes, I think we ARE twins, Heather. What number am I thinking of?

    • Cara

      December 29, 2011 at 6:53 am

If I give you my number you cannot prank call me, Richa! haha. And you definitely cannot keep me on the phone for an hour–I hate talking on the phone for that long! How about I fly you over here and we chat like little girls into wee hours of the night? 🙂

I can relate to loving the early mornings! but… we always stay up until midnight, we’re just usually home! this year we are going to dinner, but hiring a driver so we can both enjoy a cocktail. we will be home to enjoy the rest of the evening with Basil. and some prosecco. 😀 I’ll think of you when we cheers! happy new year, friend!

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:30 pm

Maybe I might take a risk and try to stay up until midnight myself. Oh who am I kidding? I wouldn’t last. But please have a drink in my honor and give Basil a big squeeze for me! Maybe you could watch “Pee Wee” as well? hehe. Happy New Year!!! 🙂

All us grannies should have a party over brunch. I’ll take being up and functioning by 4:30-5am over staying up past 10pm any day.

Girls and I will be sleeping in the new year, too! Woot!

Hey, I went in search of a persimmon today so I can make cookies, no dice. I’m starting a 7 day clense/detox tomorrow I’ll let you know how the search progresses.

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 5:02 pm

      Oooooh a detox? Do tell!
And a party brunch??? I’ll bring the Werther’s Originals 🙂

        December 28, 2011 at 5:33 pm

A couple years ago I found this 7 day *diet* detox. I like it because I’m not drinking lemonade with cayenne pepper, I get to eat and it’s mostly fruits and vegetables. I’ve been cheating a lot lately and eating stuff I know contains soy and barley and I feel awful. So new year…new kitchen habits. What better way to start then cleaning out me and the refrigerator. Here’s the link. Day 4 is killer. http://www.my7daydiet.com/

I will live through it vicariously through you! I can’t wait to hear how things go for you…

  6. Your biggest fan!

    December 28, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Ah, an ode to me * the queen grandma * 🙂
Can’t remember the last time I was awake till midnight, holiday or no holiday…I used to be like Sherry until about the time when you were born. Somewhere around there I started to switch, now I’m a morning person, up at 5:30 and the brain waves (the few I have left) are on full charge. Ha! Love the horn!
    XOXOXO

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Man, I become my mother more and more as each year passes, don’t I? And I start to look more like you 🙂 <–all good things about getting older! And yes, you ARE the queen grandma, for anyone who takes a nap to get ready for bed deserves that title! xo

  7. Robin

    December 28, 2011 at 10:43 am

I’m a grandma too, and proud of it! I just can’t stay awake that late!

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 11:04 am

This delights me so to know that there are so many grandmas out there at a youth age 🙂 Robin, you are my kind of party animal.

    December 28, 2011 at 9:44 am

How are we even related?? I am so the opposite! Wish I was more like you, though…especially now that I have kids. Thank God Cambria is old enough to bring Corynn downstairs at the wee hour they wake up. Now…if I could only teach her how to make breakfast….

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 11:04 am

Wow, there are so many things wrong in that statement. HAHA! Didn’t we switch places or something? I remember being the night owl back in the day and would wake up around 11am… Now, just the mere thought of that makes me feel like I have wasted my imaginary day.

Hey, Party Poopers Unite! Stay up late to watch 10 kazillion commercials, some lame DJ who thinks he’s clever and watch a ball drop that did so hours earlier? PJ’s, a warm cup of something, book and bed. This year though, my routine may include a chocolate covered party horn to make the tea more festive. Or shall I save it for breakfast? You’re adorable and so is your horn.

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 9:32 am

I say eat it in bed!
      Toot toot 🙂

Hello again, Cara! We usually don’t make it till midnight, either. We all are an exciting group, aren’t we?? Puppy Duke will want us in bed at his usual 10:30pm. Last year some friends invited us over for a root beer tasting and we were up till about 2 am. It took days to recover! It was a fun idea, though. There kids were there and they had about 10 root beers that we tasted and then rated on about 7 or 8 categories. You would have loved it. They got the root beers from Whole Foods, so the variety was interesting.

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 9:32 am

What a great idea! But I’m with you on the taking days to recover part. My body doesn’t function the way it used to and now I’m thrown off for the entire week if I do something like that. Especially if I load up on root beer 🙂

    December 28, 2011 at 8:16 am

Hah! The kids museum we belong to is celebrating at 12 noon on New Year’s Eve. Maybe I can hook you up with a celebration that’s more your speed! Lol! =) This little horn is hysterical! Great job!

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 8:40 am

Oooooh, celebrating New Years at noon is something I can get into! I think I might have to start up a new tradition 🙂 Thanks, Brooke!

    December 28, 2011 at 7:35 am

Right there with you. Except for me it’s 9:00 p.m. asleep and 4:15 wake up. 🙂

    Cute horns!

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 7:47 am

Eek! 4:15am is waaaaaaay early! Why so darn early??

    December 28, 2011 at 6:38 am

Ha! I’m with you, grandma! I like to try to stay up for NYE, but somehow it never happens anymore… if I’m not in bed by 9:30 or 10, I’m cranky. The Emperor crashes around 7:30 most of the time, and I can only imagine how he’d react if I shook him awake at midnight to celebrate, heh.

So, happy sleepy New Year to you too!

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:46 am

I couldn’t imagine how YOU would react having to deal with the Emperor for the remainder of the following day if you woke him up at midnight 🙂

    December 28, 2011 at 5:56 am

This is my first step on your blog and I think it is interesting and would love to read your post more often now. About what to do on New year our usual tradition is gather with friends and wait for the moment and we watch fire display on the plaza… traditional but we are always excited to do it every year.

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:48 am

Hi Raquel! So glad you found your way over here 🙂 Your New Years plans really sounds nice, actually. I would join you if only I could stay awake…

  15. Caitlin

    December 28, 2011 at 4:33 am

i go to bed and wake up early, too! sometimes i think to myself “i have off today, why am i getting up at 6:30??” but, i love being up early in the morning. you’re no party pooper 😉

dayv and i are having a nye party, so i’ll be forced to stay up until at least 2am. sunday i’ll recoop by not getting out of my pjs all day.

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:40 am

I am loving finding this stuff out! But 2am, Caitlin??? I’m crying on the inside for you! That would take me DAYS to recover from. But at the same time, it will be worth it because a party designed by Caitlin is one rip-roaring good time 🙂

  16. Reid

    December 28, 2011 at 4:11 am

I’m a total party- pooper too! (Or Grandma :D) I don’t like to be awake past 9:30 or 10pm and I really like to be home with my dog and cat by 6pm. I’m just not an evening person…
    So I’m with you!!
We can ring in the New Year early. WHOOT! (Or dream about it later.)

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:38 am

Grandmas unite! We can call each other on the phone by 7pm and see who falls asleep first! BAHA!

      • reid

        December 29, 2011 at 4:36 am

Yeah!I love it! Actually I think it would be me- only because I’m on the east coast and you’re on the west.. 🙂

It’s kind of hard to believe that its almost 2012!! This year went by so so fast!

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:37 am

It’s rather scary, isn’t it Shannon??! The older we get, the faster the time goes…and I’m not sure I like that. I wanna go back to the days when things went in slower motion.

  18. Dawn

    December 28, 2011 at 3:34 am

Haven’t decided yet. My usual plans aren’t on tap for this year, so I may stay home and fall asleep watching a dvr full of Say Yes to the Dress.

    • Cara

      December 28, 2011 at 6:36 am

That’s my girl! Your NYE plans sound absolutely lovely 🙂

      • dawn

        December 28, 2011 at 8:14 am

If you came to NC in the morning, you could stay up until midnight and it would only feel like 9pm to you.

        • Cara

          December 28, 2011 at 8:39 am

Now you are talking, I am liking this plan!! Slumber party at Dawn’s!
