Love Bug Bites

February 10, 2015 by Cara

What ever happened to the days when kids would go door-to-door-to selling things? I never see this anymore. It’s probably for everyone’s good because 1). I know I don’t want to deal with answering the door and telling them that I have no money or interest in ordering a subscription to Seventeen magazine; and 2). I know they don’t want to do this either. As a kid this was my biannual responsibility. From magazines, to candy, to cookie dough, to donations, I remember having to schlep my little 11 year old lazy bones around the neighborhood, begging for money for softball, for my school, for choir, you name it. And I did it all in the name of competition. I always had a healthy sense of competition and collecting an assortment of Fuzzy Weepuls was motivation enough for me to sell the crap out whatever it is that I was selling because for my school’s competition, the more Weepuls you accrued, the better the prizes you ultimately received at the end. And I’m all about the prizes.

Now when I see a photo of a Weepul, it brings me back to those fall days when I had exhausted every door on the block, I had just received my umpteenth “No!,” the sun had just set and I was stuck between wanting get home and eat dinner and pressing forward to accrue more sales to earn more…that’s right, Fuzzy Weepuls.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Recipe No Bake Cake Pops (just omit the chocolate coating)
  • 32 homemade vegan googly eyes
  • coconut butter
  • shredded coconut
  • 32 toothpicks with hearts glued at the end
  • 16 feet cut out from construction paper
  • 16 pieces of paper with a cute Valentine’s message

Instructions

  1. Follow the instructions for the No-Bake Cake Pops right up until you are supposed to coat them with melted chocolate.
  2. Once finished, dip each pop into the melted coconut cream. Immediately dip into the shredded coconut in a shallow bowl.
  3. Gently press on the googly eyes with coconut cream as the “glute” and allow to set completely.
  4. Glue the Valentines message to the feet cutout.
  5. Place the toothpicks on top of the head and place the Love Bug on top of the feet.

Notes

You can always use melted chocolate for the glue if you find that the eyes and feet are not sticking to your Love Bug Bites.

Recipe Notes: Everything underneath these cutie Love Bug Bites are candida-friendly except for the homemade googly eyes. You can always use non-edible googly eyes, you know, the ones you use for crafts. I know that sounds a bit absurd because 1). You have to tell the recipient of these Love Bugs to NOT eat the darn eyes, however 2). It keeps with the theme of the adorableness that are the Weepuls. They will thank you for the consistency in form

I honor those days in junior high with these Love Bug Bites: a no-bake cake pop, transformed into a version of my childhood commodity. These Love Bug Bites are such a fun way to play with your food and say I Love You.
