Savory Cracker Gingerbread Houses

December 5, 2016 by Cara

Need a fun edible craft for your kids to keep them occupied while you make dinner this Christmas season? Have I got an idea for you! So simple to make and requiring a sturdy layer of dairy free cream cheese to hold them together, these Savory Cracker Gingerbread Houses are healthier than their traditional sugary gingerbread house counterparts and don’t require half of the patience of putting together. It’s the perfect accompaniment to a warm bowl of soup!

Best part is that these Savory Cracker Gingerbread Houses don’t take much to make. You probably have the majority of the ingredients in your kitchen already. All you need is (but not limited to):

  • Gluten free crackers (I used Schar’s and they are AWESOME)
  • dairy free cream cheese (store bought or homemade)
  • dried fruit
  • gluten free pretzel sticks
  • sliced almonds
  • variety of nuts
  • gluten free O’s cereal

Now, you’re probably saying, “Cara, these look more like tents than houses,” to which I’d say back, “Yes, yes, they do.” It’s all about time-saving tricks! It’s much easier than trying to make an actual house, plus your kids can easily do this by themselves. So, okay, okay, maybe these Savory Cracker Gingerbread Houses are more like festive tents. Who cares? If it keeps your kids occupied, I call that success!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 sheets gluten free crackers (I used Schar)
  • dairy free cream cheese (store bought or homemade)

House decor (not limited to):

  • gluten free pretzels
  • dried fruit
  • sliced almonds
  • variety of nuts
  • gluten free O cereal
  • shredded coconut

Instructions

  1. Slather a nice layer of dairy free cream cheese along the long edges of one cracker sheet.
  2. Using 2 other cracker sheets, place on the edges to create a tent shape, making sure you add more cream cheese at the connection of the top. I found that it was easiest to use a toothpick to glide the cream cheese on.
  3. Glue the decorations for the house as you or your kid sees fit and have fun!

If you are looking for a good soup recipe to go with these Savory Cracker Gingerbread Houses, I say test out my Vegan “Clam” Chowder. It’s incredible, creamy, and completely dairy free. You can even make my Tortilla Soup or  Vegan Chili.
